The Number system in Estonian is pretty simple. And if you for some reason know Finnish then you'll find the numbers really easy to remember :)
Let's start with the numbers from 0 - 10
0 NULL
1 ÜKS
2 KAKS
3 KOLM
4 NELI
5 VIIS
6 KUUS
7 SEITSE
8 KAHEKSA
9 ÜHEKSA
10 KÜMME
After you have learn't the basic numbers, then you should find the rest of the system pretty easy ;)
Numbers from 11 - 19 ?
Just take the relevant basic number and add -TEIST to the end
so for example you take 1 ÜKS and add + -TEIST and you'll get ÜKSTEIST (Eleven)
ÜKS+TEIST= ÜKSTEIST
let's see the rest of them …
11 ÜKSTEIST
12 KAKSTEIST
13 KOLMTEIST
14 NELITEIST
15 VIISTEIST
16 KUUSTEIST
17 SEITSETEIST
18 KAHEKSATEIST
19 ÜHEKSATEIST
I told you it's easy!
How do we say 20, 30, 40 , 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90?
Again it's very simple ! whew!
to say THE TENS you take the relevant basic number and add -KÜMMEND to the end,
for example
take KAKS add KÜMMEND and you will get KAKSKÜMMEND
this is the correct way to say all the tens, however you will hear a lot of people saying -KEND ending especially when they say the numbers really fast.
~KAKSKEND~ (kakskümmend)
But I would advice you to use the proper way as this is not a correct way to speak and in formal situations it wouldn't sound that good either.
Let's go through all the tens…
20 KAKSKÜMMEND
30 KOLMKÜMMEND
40 NELIKÜMMEND
50 VIISKÜMMEND
60 KUUSKÜMMEND
70 SEITSEKÜMMEND
80 KAHEKSAKÜMMEND
90 ÜHEKSAKÜMMEND
How do we say all the numbers in between?
Well .. it's really easy again!!!
Take the TENS and add the basic number to the end.
for example
31 KOLMKÜMMEND ÜKS
And make sure that you wont write it all together as a one word but as two separate words.
Let's go throughough all the numbers from 0 - 99

97 ÜHEKSAKÜMMEND SEITSE
98 ÜHEKSAKÜMMEND KAHEKSA
99 ÜHEKSAKÜMMEND ÜHEKSA
WHOOP WHOOP!
Now you can say numbers from 0-99 in Estonian!!!
Let's have a look at the bigger numbers:
I wont be explaining much here as the same easy logic continues ...
100 SADA
101 SADA ÜKS
111 SADA ÜKSTEIST
345 KOLMSADA NELIKÜMMEND VIIS ( add KOLM to SADA and you'll get KOLMSADA )
1000 TUHAT
3456 KOLM TUHAT NELISADA VIISKÜMMEND KUUS
10 000 KÜMME TUHAT
100 000 SADA TUHAT
10 (6) (ÜKS) MILJON
20(6) KAKS MILJONIT
As you can see, after One Million you'll start adding the T in the end. That T is showing that the word is PLURAL.
BILLION (ÜKS) MILJARD
TRILLION (ÜKS) TRILJON
The same T rule applies to these numbers.
THE END!
Have fun learning!

You're more than welcome :)
DeleteI don't know much Russian so unfortunately i can't understand what is written there :D
He writes, that he is not sure, whether you know Russian, but he is from Russia and he adores Estonian. Also he says that even he doesn't understand English very well, but he understands you clearly well!
DeleteSo, I also want to say you thank you for your lessons!

ReplyDeleteand my second cousins do to so these videos have really helped Thank You
you're more than welcome :D
DeleteThank you for your lessons. I hope you don't mind a slight correction for your English: It seems that you mean to say "review" instead of "revise." "Review" means that look over what you've done. "Revise" means that you intend to *change* something in the course of looking it over.
ReplyDeleteHello! I love your videos; they make learning Estonian seem very easy. I'm from Mexico and I'm going to travel to Tallin in June this year -2014-, just for three months. So... your videos are very helpful for learning about the culture. However, I have to watch them several times as my mother tongue is Spanish, and Estonian is no way related to my languange. But one or two words are very similar. Anyways, I love learning languages and knowing different cultures through its language. Great videos again! Greetings from the other side of the world!
ReplyDeleteHii m learning wants to thank you and how I could contact you.😍😍😍😍😍
